How we estimate your retirement corpus
Your corpus is the lump sum you aim to have on the day you retire — invested so it funds your living expenses, rising with inflation, all the way to your life expectancy. Here is exactly how we work it out.
Inflate your expenses
We grow today’s monthly expenses by your inflation rate over the years to retirement, so the figure reflects what life will actually cost then.
expense at retirement = today’s expense × (1 + inflation)^years
Size the corpus
We take the present value of every inflation-adjusted yearly withdrawal across your retirement, using a real return (post-retirement return adjusted for inflation).
real return = (1 + post-return) ÷ (1 + inflation) − 1
Find the monthly SIP
Finally we calculate the monthly investment that, compounded at your pre-retirement return, grows to that corpus by the day you retire.
SIP = corpus ÷ future-value factor (pre-return, years)
Assumptions & limits
- · Expenses grow steadily at a single inflation rate, before and during retirement.
- · Returns are assumed constant; real markets vary year to year.
- · The corpus is fully drawn down by your life expectancy (nothing left over).
- · Existing savings (EPF, NPS, PPF) are not subtracted — your real SIP may be lower.
- · Taxes and one-off costs (medical, travel) are not modelled separately.
- · This is a simplified model for guidance, not personalised advice.
